In 1765 Sremska Mitrovica became a free military municipality, and was given an independent local administration. In such circumstances the town began to develop rapidly, especially in respect to trade, due to its favourable geographical position. Docks and warehouses had been built along the river.

The old town market was becaming a contemporary trade centre. This square is a part of the old town core. In its present form it can be found on the street-plan of Mitrovica from 1780. It was named after the wheat trade that took place on it. The weat was transported by river to every corner of the Empire. In the 19th century the square had developed into a trading centre with good access to the port and town centre. The square was surrounded with fashionable town houses and shops. In 1888, Mitrovica became a free imperial town and its first mayor was the Honourable Ćira Milekić. The house no. 13, dating from mid-19th century, belonged to his family.

It was built in the neorenessance style. This area had been used far a similar purpose from ancinet times. The proof of this are the archaeological remains of a square that belonged to the ancient city of Sirmium and which have been found on the same spot. The square was declared a cultural monument of great importance.
